In the 20 seasons of the Jewish Repertory Theater, has there ever been a more mirthful, more melodic, more trenchant, more touching show than it's new musical "That's Life!"?
Conceived, directed, and choreographed by Helen Butleroff and performed by a versatile cast of five, this show speeds from one number to the next, with an occasional monologue, examining Jewish life in America. A team of a dozen inventive lyricists and four talented composers provides the ear-catching songs that examine everything from the diversity of Jewish life to the loss of patriarchal authority. There are numbers about the disappearance of the "nice Jewish boy", children pushed by parents to achieve [a dance number called "Tap My Potential"]. nose jobs, the preservation of Yiddish, an Orthodox girl's heartbreaking lament at being segregated from the men in the synagogue and guilt-ridden assimilation in the Christian community. Differences in musical taste unfold in a hilarious rap rendition of "Bei Mir Bist Du Schoen".
There's scarcely a line that is not freighted with insight or buoyed by observant wit, as in "Gorgeous Kay", when a young Jewish man copes with lyrics that refer to Jesus after agreeing to go Christmas caroling in Akron, Ohio in 1966, with the Christian girl he adores.

Showing off their talents in many roles are David Beach, Stephen Berger, Lisa Rochelle, Cheryl Stern and Steve Sterner.
"That's Life!" plays at Playhouse 91 Tuesdays,Wednesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays at 8pm. Wednesdays and Sundays at 2pm abd Sundays at 7pm.
